Unit 5   I’m watching TV (Section A)
             by Xiao Huixian (April 8 th,2010)
Teaching aims
Knowledge: Learn the Present Continuous Tense and some new words: doing homework, watching TV, cleaning, eating dinner, reading a book, talking on the phone, apartment
Ability: Listening, speaking and writing skills and Communicative competence.
Moral education: the ability to cooperate and deal with the difficulties.
Key points: What are you doing? I’m watching TV.
 What's he/she doing? He/She's reading.
What are they doing? They're watching TV.         
Difficult points: The structure of the Present Progressive Tense and the use of the Present Continuous Tense, especially the present participle
Teaching methods: Task based
Teaching procedures
Step1   Greeting
Step2   Revision
What do you(does he/she)do?
What do you(does he/she) want to be? Why?
Step3 Presentation
1. Let the students guess “What am I doing? ”Then write “I’m opening the door/writing/running.”
 2. Show some pictures on the screen and lead out the new phrases and target languages.
eg. T: What are you doing ?
S: I am doing my homework.(Help him/her to answer)
T:What is he /she  doing  ?
Ss: He /she  is doing his/her homework.
Learn : watching TV, cleaning  reading a book, eating dinner, talking on the phone...as the same way.
Step4 Ask and answer
Look at the pictures on the screen and ask “What’s the boy doing? / What are they doing?”, then help the students to answer. Then let the students practice in pairs to ask and answer.
In the same way, practice in pairs according to the next picture.
Step5 Practice 1a and 1c
Show the picture and ask, What’s  this?–It’s an apartment.
1. Match the words with the people in the pictures in Section A ( 1a)
2. Pairwork, ask and answer questions about the pictures. Ask some pairs to act out their conversations. (1c)
Step6 Listening
Let the students take out of a piece of paper and listen to the material about 2a , then answer the questions.
Step7 Guessing Game.
1. Ask several students come to the front to do some actions and let the students guess “What is he/she doing?
Look at the picture on the screen and ask, “Is Nancy doing homework? What is she doing?”
2.  Play a game, look at the next picture and guess “What is Bill /Mary/Tom doing?
  Then practice in pairs to ask and answer like that.
Step8 Summary
The use of the Present Continuous Tense, especially the present participle
Step9 Writing exercises
Fill in blanks and correct the sentences.
Step10 Homework
Draw a picture of your family or your friends in the park or at school, describe what they are doing.
